Some descriptions of childhood development

According to the Early Years Foundation Stage framework (England), and bearing in mind that children develop at their own rates and in their own ways, children typically develop the following things within these age ranges:

  • 16-26 months
  1. Copies familiar expressions, e.g. Oh dear! All gone!
  2. Explores and experiments using senses and whole body.
  • 22-36 months
  1. Listens with interest to the noises adults make when they read stories.
  2. Is interested in others’ play and is starting to join in.
  3. Runs safely on whole foot.
  4. Is aware that some actions can hurt or harm others.
  5. Repeats words or phrases from familiar stories.
  6. Recites some number names in sequence.
  7. Experiments with blocks, colours and marks.
  • 30-50 months
  1. Responds to simple instructions, e.g. Put your toys away.
  2. Can catch a large ball.
  3. Notices what adults do, imitating what is observed and then doing it spontaneously when the adult is not there.
  4. Can play in a group.
  5. Holds books the correct way up and turns pages.
  • 40-60+ months
  1. Uses a pencil and holds it effectively.
  2. Extends vocabulary by grouping, naming, and exploring the sounds of new words.
  3. Writes own name and other things such as labels or captions.
  4. Constructs with a purpose in mind, using a variety of resources.
